Title: Herman Terrace/Otway Street Chatham
Post by: kyn on November 10, 2011, 18:29:02
On the corner of Herman Terrace and Otway Terrace is this building.  It looks very pub like - or was it always a residence?

I can't quite make out the writing on it either...   The ???????? Hospital ??????.........

Is that Herman Terrace or Cromwell Terrace?  The 1896 OS Map (the first that shows those streets) shows a pub on the corner of Cromwell Terrace/Ottway Street, but not Herman Terrace. If it was not a pub it must have been a shop.

Ok, I just checked, the one on the Corner of Cromwell/Ottway is the Portland Vase and that is still there (or was a year or two ago!), so I guess that must be a former shop.

Thats a good point, the wall against Otway Terrace has been rebuilt, so may have been a shop window!

If you look on Google earth the window frame looks original on the Otway side and shop style ie down to a couple of feet off the ground, on the Hermann side there is a single private entrance door and window

Does it say 'The Free Hospital' ???

Further down I think it says something about government?

What writing are you referring to, please? My wife's and my last last memory of it was as a tobacconist/newsagent.

Hi Peterchall
the writing we are refering to is in the red square above the old door... It is very feint though.

When I was a kid (late 70s) it was a shop.
I used to hang out there a lot to watch the trains. I was sad even then.  :)

I need to go to Specsavers :)
The shop door was on the corner where the yellow bricks are and the shop window was on Otway Street. The shop was very small and was an extension of the house next door, and probably still is. We wonder if the square of bricks over the door was window, although obviously older than those of the door. 'About my Place' shows that the shop door and window were still there until 5 years(?) ago, but the bit over the door is not very clear

Note the name of this pub - it's called "The Portland Arms", not the "Portland Vase", so there must have been a name change at some point. Also, it says Herman Terrace which is incorrect.

Smiffy, are you able to read the notice in the window of the public bar on your original print/neg?

It has puzzled me for some time, all Leney's pubs had a similar poster in the windows, but all are unreadable.

Thanks

DaveTheTrain, I've had a look at all of the photos I have of Leney pubs and, as you say, they all seem to have the same sign in the window. Unfortunately none of them are of high enough detail to be readable. Perhaps one of our members who is more of a pub expert can throw some light?
