Title: Old photo of Franklin Road, Gillingham
Post by: liney on December 29, 2011, 13:01:50
My grandparents ran a Grocers shop in Franklin Road, Gillingham. I think it was number 16 which is now a house.

Does anyone have an old photo showing the shop?  It would have been in the late 60's early 70's.

Thanks

Are you sure it was No 16?  The reason I ask is because no 10 is a tackle shop and has been for as long as I can remember but I don`t recall a shop (almost) next door.
There was however, a large greengrocers at the other end of Franklin Road at the junction with Gillingham Road where there is (or was, not been up it for at least a year now) a Charity Shop - Cats Protection League I believe.

If you look at Google Maps (streetlevel) you can see where the shopfront has been replaced.

Yes I am sure.  The angling shop was there at the time as my grandparents were friendly with the people who owned it then.

There did used to be a shop at number 16.  I know that Cllr Juby, who lives there now, used to run a shop from there before converting it to a house, but I do not know what it was historically.  Hope this helps.

I lived in Gillingham all the way through the 60's and 70's. The Anglers Den was in Franklin Street but I do not remember a greengrocers at all. The only greengrocer I can remember was Brookers at the end of Franklin Road.

Brookers actually had three shops, one in Franklin Road, almost opposite the chip shop, that was at the end of Gordon Road, the second was in Twydall shopping centre and the third was on the Top Road, Watling Street (I worked there as a Saturday boy). My mum worked in Brookers on the top road as well for at least 15 years. Anyone remember her, Maureen O'Neil? The manager was Colin (can't remember his last name) and the store was run by Adrian Brooker, who was George Brookers son.

The Weggs, that's them. I thought it was a grocers. I remember them selling sweets but they also sold things like tins and washing powders.

It was always known as "Arthur's" during my childhood.  My sister and I would occasionally be given half an apple or something as a freebie whilst we queued up with our mum.

Took this old photo of a Hairdresser's signage from at least the 1950's. PELHAM WEIGHT - Unusual name - Sounds like a haircut! Sign has been painted over now.

I was going to put this on here a while a go, but thought it was the name of the hair dressers that used to be there recently, didn't know it was an old name.  Silly me.

I well remember Pelham Weight as my father was a bus driver at Gillingham Depot just up the road from here and he used to take me in there where I sat on a plank across the chair to have a short back and sides.
Hand clippers in those days, no electric ones then, your eyes used to water when the person cutting your hair didn't move the clippers fast enough and caught your hair at the roots. Ouch!
It was always pretty busy as the shop was used by just about every bloke who worked at Maidstone and District.
Dead opposite the Plaza cinema.

Pelham Weight, not a name one would associate with a Barber`s Shop. I remember seeing this shop, many years ago, but always mis-read it as Wright. There was once a Barber`s Shop in Sittingbourne run by Mr. W. Hellard Wood (had my first haircut there with the handclippers). Both names seem more suitable for a Harley Street Surgeon but - `what`s in a name?`.

I have just run the spell checker over this post, just to see what it would make of these two unusual names. It OKd Pelham Weight but  suggested that Hellard Wood should be changed for Wheel Nut!!!

The greengrocer 'practically opposite' Trafalgar Road on the corner of Vicarage Road was Checksfield's.  A bit further down was another run by Arthur Brooker.  Arthur had a brother named George who ran a greengrocery along the A2 "Top Road" not far from where Kwik Fit is now.
Going down to 21 Canterbury Street and opposite what was the Royal Oak was Jennings greengrocer run by Bob Jennings, who sold out to Tommy Gorf in about 1960.  The shop was then run by George Bettle (who had greengrocery and butcher shops in Chatham (either Church Street or Whittaker St).  21 Canterbury Street and the two other shops on the Lock Street corner were sold to an oil company and became a garage, extending the old Cleveland Garage in Lock Street.
The Jennings family also had a greengrocery shop in Brompton High Street, run by Billy Heard, before it closed on his retirement; and another in John Street Rochester, run by Bob's brother Fred.  A third brother, Jack Jennings ran a wholesale greengrocery with a store just up the road from Fred's shop.  Jack's son, Roy, took over for a while but by the 1970s competition from the supermarkets was driving the small greengrocers and wholesalers out of business.  I think Fred was the last to go, sometime around 1972.

Does anyone know what the big house that is now the Franklin Road Dental Practice used to be? It is totally different to any other premises in the street.

I only walked past there last week, noticed the gates and sign but didn't look at the building. If it had been the newer build two doors up towards Duncan Rd, I could have told you . Had relatives that lived in that one before demolition, it was condemned ! The late man of the house, who was very tall, sat on the loo seat after a bath and it fell through the floor !! The bathroom was tiny. He wasn't hurt fortunately but they were soon moved out. I've never noticed that big house before though ?

Its proper name is Franklin House Dental Practice, and has been there since 1935. Being right at the back of that open space its back wall is actually on the alley between Franklin Road and Balmoral Road. It doesnít look very old and I wonder if it was built specifically as a dentistís.

My interest is that it is my dentistís surgery, to which I go because they claim to specialise in people who are frightened of dentists!

Thanks.

Itís odd in standing right at the back of its piece of ground, and made me wonder.

They certainly donít frighten me as much as  some dentists have!
