Look up "The Capel Battery" on this site, there is a large thread for this.

I don't believe there is much information about this shelter apart from that it used to exist unfortunately.

Beachbum, this may be a separate shelter to the Capel site.

All the Coast Batteries between Folkestone, Dover and St Margaret's built during WW2 had deep shelters built with them.  There are plans available of most of them.  The Capel Battery Deep Shelter is in poor condition with parts that have collapsed.  Are you referring to the Capel Battery Deep Shelter?

The deep shelter entrance has been back filled I believe, and I think the site 'might' have had an RAF connection (Radio Station?) . That's all I can find on it...

Hello guys, thank you for your input, the site in question is down the hill from the Capel site. It is situated in some woods behind the playground / housing estate, I literally cannot find anything about it other than the fact it is backfilled and that it was perhaps something used by the RAF

Is this the area?  http://binged.it/WQL6I8

Nearby were some anti-tank obstacles I believe.  Just above the area in question there is a pillbox.  This could have been a field gun battery rather than a fixed gun one, which would explain why there are no emplacements remaining.  Or it could have been for other uses.  I will have a dig around and see if I can find out anything further.

I am sorry I can't give you any information about it.  I have checked the Times and Pastscape and had a quick google for you.  I assume that there isn't much known as so little remains and what does remain is not easily found.  I hope some more information does come to light!

As you go up Dover Hill, Folkestone, towards Dover there is a pillbox on the left, part way up. The pillbox used to be in the entrance to a quarry which has since been used as a rubbish tip and filled up. The pillbox is very overgrown and not easy to spot. There is another pillbox a bit further up the hill on the other side of the road with turnbull mountings. There are quite a few pillboxes in this area along Crete Road and some part way down the hill, part of the coastal crust. There may well have been a fougasse on Dover Hill and there are the remains to be seen of one on the other road going towards Hawinge. There was a heavy anti-aircraft battery along Crete Road at Hope Farm.  Only a section of concrete road now remains.

There is the Deep Shelter at Capel Battery which was part of the battery.  I am only asking, what was the Deep Shelter in the quarry for?  What establishment was based in the quarry?  I have seen plans of lots of tunnels in the south east Kent but never seen or heard of one at this location, I am interested to know what was there.

It's mentioned in the tunneling company's war diaries as a Brigade HQ or something I think.

In my research for Capel there is mention of an incomplete Brigade Hq. in the quarry, but I don`t have that bit of the tunneling companies war diary, but there is some stuff about this area in the diary at Kew. I only copied the bits revelant to Capel.

My mate told me a light training aircraft (out of Hawkinge Aerodrome) crashed into this quarry sometime after WW2. He was a Folkestone special P.C. with a good knowledge of the town but I haven't found any info about a crash happening there. Anyone know more about the quarry's history?

I recall a Canberra crashed there in the late 50s. And I vaguely remember reading somewhere about something having been dug underground but, I think, a bit to the east.

Many thanks chasg! So an aircraft did crash in the quarry. I'll have a look for info on that one.

TowerWill - while you're looking see if there's any info on two Super Sabres of the Belgian Air Force crashed in fog at the same spot in the early 60s.  The quarry, if I've got the right one, was used as a rubbish dump at the time.

Hello Paolo, I've looked at several websites so far for English Electric Canberra crashes at Folkestone but not found any mention yet. That was really bad luck if there were two more aircraft crashes there. I'll keep an eye out for the two you mention. My thinking was that some photos of the crash site might exist showing a tunnel entrance. On Bing Maps a rectangular area can be seen above the sharp bend on the hill road out of Folkestone to Dover. What looks like some remains of a chalk quarry face can just be seen above the infill.

Sorry TowerWill - wrong aircraft.  I was sure there were two but the fact that there were two crew may have confused.

Thanks for the extra info Paolo. The only Wiki item I've come across so far for (or near) the area under discussion is for 1921:"25 January – A Belgian Airco DH.4 O-BAIN crashed near the Valiant Sailor at Dover Road, in Folkestone". That's before the tunnel would have been excavated in WW2 anyway. Not a good area for air crashes was it! I had a look at the Old Maps site and see there were two chalk pits in this area. I've taken the the upper quarry as the one under discussion.

TowerWill - I guess someone's going to pull us up for going off topic but you're right, it is the upper quarry I'm referring to.  I can see the spot from where I am and its right at the end of the cliffs so understandable that its somewhat of a blackspot.

Yes Paolo, we'd better not get too far off topic but there doesn't seem to be any photos of this site. I've been past the place twice today on the top decks of buses. Up above the sharp corner, the remains of an entrance can be seen which may have gone into the quarry before it was infilled. I've visited three of the deep shelters near to Dover. These shelters all had two entrances. The one at Fan Hole had a lower entrance coming out behind the sound mirror and very unsafe it was less than 20 years after the war.

It's been interesting reading through the posts after my post, still no real concrete fact though, would love to see a plan for it, I have the fire brigade plans for everything else in the area bar this one, seems to elude most people.

Best way is to go and have a look! Good time of the year to find it too, as the vegetation has died down.

I've been up there just before we had snow and had a look round, I found what I believed to be one of the entrances but I'm interested to see a plan of it so I can try and work out where the other one may have been

Hello sr34 a good find! At present I'm trying to upload a plan I made of the Langdon Hole Tunnels in the early 1960s. I've just found it in my old notebook. I expect the tunnels were of a similar design.

Not to worry silverainbow. If the quarry is filled in there will not be much to find anyway.

I have not seen plans of this site or any other at Capel come to that, I have plans of all the sites in Dover which seem to be readily available but have drawn blanks on these.

The three I've visited had their tunnels lined with corrugated steel sheets which still look in good condition but the U shaped supports are rusting going by photos on KHF. The Langdon Hole site doesn't look much different now than the last time I went down it (possibly early 1970s). I recall the Long Hill site having access tunnels going into the hillside and some collapses had occured at a tunnel entrance. I read an article in the Dover Express newspaper about the Fan Hole site last week. It wouldn't surprise me if the site near Folkestone is still in fair condition under the rubbish tip as I think it's also dug into a chalk hill.

A (very) rough idea of the layout can be found at coordinates (x) 623849 (y) 137628 on the Kent interactive map 1946.  Strange that nobody has come up with any plans.
