Title: Babyland in Duncan rd Gillingham.
Post by: BygoneMedway on April 04, 2013, 16:19:18
This photo was taken at Babyland in Duncan Road, Gillingham. Anyone know who the girl on the right is and what year it was taken?  Long shot I know but I have seen the way you members track down the answers on some posts. Impressive stuff.

Sorry for keep asking for help rather than adding to the forum. I won`t always be doing the asking. Promise  :)

Anyway here is the picture. Many thanks.

I'm sure I recognise her! As soon as I saw the pic, the name Joy (Riddle?) popped into my head, but it's an awful long time since I left school which is where I knew her from. I'd guess the pic was taken about 1964/66 ish, we bought our 'continental' pushchair there in 1966,  but I don't remember knowing any shop staff then.

The shop was right next door to the Plaza cinema towards the Railway Station end.

BygoneMedway, Prefabkid has a photo of the Plaza cinema, you can just see to the right of the cinema a shop, which was Babyland and may have still been Babyland when the photo was taken.

Hope this helps,

Colin.

I remember seeing lots of Silvercross Prams in the shop.

The shop was just down from the cinema, next to the alley.

The alley leads through to the Balmoral Masonic Hall, if that helps.

There is a little glimpse of the shop, it's on the right of the cinema.  This is one of Prefabkid's photos which he has allowed me to put on here to show where the shop was. The shop is now David Andrew, estate agents.

Thank you colin haggart and Prefabkid.  :)

The two ladies  left & middle) were sisters by all accounts. This must of been published in a local paper at the time. It has that look about it. What local papers were in publication in the 60's ?

Is there a way of tracking it down ?

Sorry Colin Haggart but Babyland was further down Duncan Road, as stated previously, on the corner of the alley that leads to the Masonic Hall and continues to Balmoral road. Matrix Oriental restaurant now occupies the building.

Thanks for that Peterj.   I was going by what Lyn L  said.  Lyn L said; " The shop was right next door to The Plaza towards the railway station end."  I took that to mean that the shop was where the estate agents is now.

Sorry folks,  hands up, I got it wrong (red face here) but it was a long time ago now, my son was 48 last month  :) I can see now looking on GE, that it was by the alley.

I was starting  to think I had lost the plot, even thought I might go down to Aldi to check it out.

Lyn L. You are a silly old duffer (only joking).  It just goes to show how we can get things wrong sometimes, at least on here we have others to help put things right.

Babyland is now an oriental restaurant. I recall many occasions looking at the displays in the windows that ran along the alleyway down the side of the shop. For boys toys in Gillingham it was always Babyland, Bakers Models in Canterbury Street or the old Co-Op in the High Street.

Talking of boy's toys, I have fond memories of Blundells in Gillingham High Street.
