Title: Public urinal under Chatham Viaduct.
Post by: Ajemp on November 30, 2015, 11:32:45
The old toilet near Waghorn's Statue was there for many years, I can recall a barber shop there as well. I remember that the barber had a collection of paintings that he had done. I don't know when it closed down. He was there forever it seemed. Any memories? Something for the weekend sir?

I have a vague memory of both possibly being there in the 1960s when as schoolboys we made a train trip to Chatham. We visited the Lines and Rochester Castle.Isn't the site what's left of a defended gateway?

I remember I had my last haircut there before I went off to do my Basic Training in 1985. I've had the same haircut (a number zero all over) ever since.

I remember when students (presumably) used to paint footprints in white leading from the statue into the bog and back again. Never used the barbers there personally...the thought of small talk about sport and bad smells was enough to put me off. :-(((

Hi all, I remember the toilets very well. Never had a hair cut there, always used Woolis in Rochester myself. The foot steps were painted as part of rag week at the art school.,just across the road was an AFS station, at that time I think it was manned by part time fireman weekends only.
Recall a local celebrity who often frequented the paved area in front of the toilets, a Mr pester sharp known locally as the King of the teddy boys.

It wasn't a urinal to star off with it did have cubicles too. They were removed in the 1970s, you could still see where they were.

Remember those toilets well and the barber and Peter Sharp who went away for murder in the late 90s i believe but i have heard he is out now and still alive.
Also remember the fire station opposite the urinals and when they used to use an air raid siren to call in the firemen when needed

Sorry to ask such an obvious question, but it's some twenty years since I last frequented the streets of my beloved Medway Towns, could some one please oblige my curiosity, what is the place used for now?
Is it still a Public toilet?

I met Peter Sharp, or rather he met me. We danced at Gillingham`s Pavilion on Saturday nights.
One night he gatecrashed the Pavilion, by the side alley, with many of his friends He did not
disturb us at all, but when the dance ended, my wife & I made for the bus, waiting outside.
I chose the top deck, sitting at the back, when Peter came upstairs with friend`s & sat down                    near us. All went well, until he started swearing. I asked him, ` would you mind not swearing,                       in front of my wife `. All hell let loose, he got up grabbed me by my lapels of my raincoat, then
he threatened ` to do me `. One friend of his said ` leave it until we got off the bus at the Fire
Station, then we will do `im. The bus duly arrive at the Fire Station, and they all trooped off.
I told my wife to `sit tight `. There was a coffee stall near the Rail Station, which they made for,
but I decided to carry on,.to St. Bart`s Hospital, then go the long way round to Dale Steet,.to
avoid a bashing. How did they know, we normally, get off at the Fire Station ?

I remember back in the early 80s my friend, a young women, used to go in the toilets to get her hair cut even though it was for men. I waited there with her once, I felt very out of place knowing it was a mens toilets :)
