Title: Sheldwych Chalkwell
Post by: AdrianPearce on March 07, 2016, 02:50:51
There is a chalkwell in Sheldwych where the shaft is accessed via a lid in the front path of a house. Below the 3 chambers are in good condition.

Almost certainly late 17th century. There was a write up of the site in the Kent Archaeological Society Journal last year.

It was shown on the BBC TV show "Secret Britain" tonight. But take the claim of it being under the cricket ground with a pinch of salt !

Thanks Biggles.

I thought it looked familiar when I saw it on tv last night.
