Title: Balfour Road, Rochester/Chatham
Post by: mikegunnill on December 05, 2017, 08:16:05
I have a death certificate showing the last address as " Medway *****, Balfour Road, Rochester. I can't read the second word after Medway, could be HAYNEE.  When I get the full certificate I should be able to read it better, I  only have a rough pdf at the moment.

I note the building has been in council ownerships for a number of years and may have been Medway Cottage Homes.

My man died 13/1/1968 at this address aged 87. Could this have been an old folks home?  The address is now listed as Chatham but on the certificate it is Rochester.

I am not really interested in the history of the house, but what the building was in January 1968.  Can anyone help please?

Thank you

Mike

The certificate probably say's Medway HOMES.
If you look at 'Workhouses in Medway ' site , scroll down to Medway Cottage Homes , it gives the history of the site. Only say's ( Later in article ) only building left is the school house, now used by Medway Social Services, but not from what date.

Thx Lyn L: I under stood about Medway Cottage Homes.  No longer standing of course but leaving the school standing-which I think is the existing building. I assume that building, in 1968 must have been an Old Folks Centre. My man lived in Strood and may be, couldn't look after himself anymore.  As always - questions/questions!  I am grateful for your help though. Many thanks Lyn L. x

I found the following post on here from Chatham Boy:  "I attended the junior school in the eighties, and the cottage homes were still being used then as old peoples homes."

That helps a great deal.  Thank you again

This is a repost of a picture looking south toward the homes that I uploaded sometime ago, since deleted thanks to photobucket. The only surviving building is shown centre left (now part of Balfour Junior Academy) and what was the old junior school is visible far left.
