Title: Cabbage Island.
Post by: lutonman1 on June 15, 2018, 11:17:46
You may know or not, that in Chatham`s main library, there is a free postcard of the Luton Arches. showing a tram running to Chatham. I noticed this card this week. Maybe other libraries carry it.
The card says ` Greetings from Cabbage Island ` and showing a cabbage.

Cabbage Island was what they called Luton, I`m not sure why they did this though.

I think there was a discussion on the forum some time ago about the origins of Cabbage Island. I believe it has something to do with the large amount of vegetables that the residents of Luton used to grow on their extensive allotments.

Thatís odd. I always thought Sheppey was known as Cabbage Island! Maybe it was the locals name for that area of Luton though and as I didnít live that way never heard it.
