Title: Ammo Dump at Thor Chemical factory Westwood
Post by: alysloper on June 30, 2009, 16:18:23
Does anyone know anything about an ammunition dump which was sited at what was the Thor Chemical plant near Westwood in Thanet?

Also, there is a tall building near this site which bore traces of camouflage paint in the late 80s when I first moved to Thanet - does anyone know what this might have been? The building is - I think - still there.

thanks
Ian

i've checked out the Aux unit base and that was at Vincent's Farm, further down the road (nothing left of it now, more's the pity!)

Thor chemical plant is actually still there off Margate Road - I just heard there was an ammo dump there in WW2.
Thanks
Ian

The aux unit is said to have had a radio room in a barn at Nash Court Farm. Never heard of Vincent being used by the aux. units or anybody else in WW2, the barn was used as a mortuary after a Gotha bomber crashed nearby in WW1, and again in the late 1940s after a mosquito crashed onto the crowd going into an air show at Manston.
AUX units hides were at spratling street in a chalk pit , now filled, and underneath the chimney of a brick works at what is now haine industrial estate.

Sorry, I may have made a mistake over the name of the farm Doh! I spoke to the chap who owns the farm and he showed me round. His grandfather was one of the auxiliaries (?) I have a special interest in 6th Thanet HG - do you have much info about them?

thanks
Ian

P.S. I read on a website about the "ammo dump" - perhaps they were confused?

Ammo Dump Thor Chemicals. According to AA Command by Colin Dobson there was an ack-ack battery at Updown Farm which is on the other side of the road to Thor Chemicals, this would certainly tie in with other structures in the area.

Mid fifties, I worked at Lodge Hill RNAD. Recall stocks of large calibre shell dye marker bags marked
'Thor Chemicals`, could it be the same firm?
