Title: Bomb Damage Gillingham
Post by: clive on November 16, 2009, 09:03:35
This may be a long shot but does anybody have any information regarding WW2 bomb damage in Milburn Road Gillingham.
Right at the top end of the road there is a group of 5 houses which do not match the rest of the street. Some of the locals have said that they were bombed during WW2.

Any info on this would be appreciated...

Clive, You might like to take a look at the BBC Peoples War website and search for Milburn Road Gillingham. There are a couple of first-hand memories on the site about bombing in Milburn Road.

Hello Clive,

I think the book 'Front Line County' by A. Rootes has the answer to your question:

'[Gillingham, 1940]' ".a raid on the borough at 12.55pm on Wednesday 18th September dropped about ten high-explosive bombs in the Milburn Road area; at least seven homes were wrecked and many more seriously damaged; five people were killed, twenty-two seriously injured and thirty-one slightly hurt".

The book mentions other incidents in Gillingham, but that is the only one that specifically mentions Milburn Road.

Regards,
peterchall
