Title: Hougham 8" Battery, Dover
Post by: Trikeman on December 30, 2008, 23:22:36
Aerial view of Observation posts/bunkers just above Samphire Hoe, between Folkestone and Dover. When you fly along this stretch of cliffs it's amazing just how many gun batteries and observation posts/shelters there are. Must have been busy during the war!

My neighbour and his father had workshops up there from the '60's onward:Up until TML threw them off the land.  I know he's been in the dressing station as have half the population of Aycliffe, over a certain age.
Doesn't the land still belong to TML? They own the old farm where the workers village once was and hold the keys to the gates there.

The tunnels were used by TML as a fire training facility. I heard it took them a while to find the entrances. I don't know if it was them who blocked the entrances, or the company that built the new A20. Strangelights should be able to help with this one as he spent a lot of time up there in the past.

Yes,i remember the tunnels.I knew nothing of them until a small hole appeared around the back of the barn. The ground on the track had become erroded away as we used to take allsorts of vehicles up and down there. One day one of the lads shone a torch in to see more and then it was "lets get digging! From what i can remember, the tunnels went in quite a distance with some branches in various directions.I,m not sure if we ever explored them fully. As to who filled the entrance in,i think it might have been TML,but at this stage we had been evicted from the farm workshops due to the building of the A20 extension.I think the entrance although well buried maybe somewhere between the boundry fence and the side of the A20 itself.I just wish we had all took more interest in the tunnels at the time.I dont think any of us took any photos.Back then it was just another adventure.

The entrance is still there, the corrugated sheeting can be seen going into the bank, but it's backfilled

Take the A20 out of Dover and you will see a lay-by on the left, park there and the battery is in the field.

Yes it does I think, but there is not a great deal to see on that side of the A20.

sorry, im getting my m20 and a20 muddled, i should be referring to the area above samphire hoe,i assume one walks to the location from aycliffe, am i correct in thinking this.

Hougham Battery is disected by the new A20. The guns accommodation and shelter are/were inland of the A20, whereas the plotting room and O.Ps. plus various other bits and bobs are on the cliff-side of the A20 just down from the Lydden Spout Battery.

If you want to get to the area where the guns once stood, you can get there from Farthingloe. There's not much left there; Farthingloe Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery site is nearby though, and that's pretty intact.

I would be interested to know where as would like to explore the tunnels, who would we need to speak to in order to gain access in an official capacity ? so that we could get machinery in or would it be a case of good old fashioned hard graft ?
