Always find this place interesting when I fly over - there was WW1 aerodrome nearby at Palmarsh [RFC No1 [Aux] School of Aerial Gunnery] and I think the officers used the redoubt for accomodation rather than a wooden hut!

Is this what the redoubt at Dungeness would have been like too?

I am not certain, but I think the redoubt at Dungerness was more along the lines of a fieldwork using earth banks and possibly timber and brink revetments, rather than a permenant brick structure like the Dymchurch, Eastborne and Harwich Redoubt. The Dungerness earthwork was more of a tented camp as well and appears have been larger in area compared to the others. According Pastscape it predates the construction of the other Redoubts, Royal Miltary Canal and the Martelllo Towers. Link to the pastscape entry: http://www.pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=462686

Does anybody have more precise information about the Redoubt in WW II? It seems that two 6in guns were installed early on, possibly 4 later on, and that there were also AA guns (for local defence I assume - 40 mm Bofors or just MGs?) and of course the MG bunkers for Vickers MGs still visible. It further seems that in 1940 the 3rd Independent Company was protecting it. Since this was a Commando-type unit of some 290 men, it seems unlikely that were all intended to fight from within the redoubt, it would have been overcrowded and they would hardly have been able to handle their weapons effectively. It seems more likely that the larger part was intended to be outside guarding the approaches to the redoubt and/or being held in reserve for a counterattack in case of a landing attempt nearby. Are there perhaps any pillboxes or traces of old trenches or other fieldworks that would support this assumption?
Thanks in advance,
Gerard (from Luxembourg)

If my memory serves me right, this was in military hands during the sixties, I seem to think that we (Queens Own Buffs) went there, sat on the steps and were fired at by various weapons from the other side of the redoubt, the reason being for us to recognise the sounds of guns being fired at us and the crack as bullets passed us into targets between the stairs... quite an experience.

Thank you for the photos. My grandparents live a short distance from the firing ranges, I sometimes walk along the beach (when the Army aren't practising, of course), and sit atop the demolished Martello tower (No. 19?). Often wondered what the Redoubt looks like inside.
