Great picture Spekes Bottom, but based on the information Scrumdown gave in his earlier post and the link to Google Maps, I think the pub would just be out of the picture on the left, just off the smaller roundabout - unless anyone else out there knows otherwise...

I posted this on another forum about the M2. When I saw this picture it did bring back memories of there being a pub being by the motorway junction. Is the Bridgewood Cottage in this picture?

I do remember the pub very well, it was one of the more eccentric ones in Chatham. In my recollection there were bus seats in the Public bar and coach seats in the Saloon. It was run by a woman, who, as I recall, had the place until it closed. As is usually the case, once the pub closed there was a conventient fire which rendered the proporty unsafe. How many pubs has that happened to?

Thanks Scrumdown. If you went in there in the late 80s then it survived for longer than I thought. Perhaps it had a fire and then reopened, or perhaps I've got it all completely wrong....

Surely someone out there must know for sure???

If it's the same one I remember, it was located here (on the patch of grass behind the signs next to the big tree):

http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=51.335493,0.507275&spn=0,0.004495&z=19&layer=c&cbll=51.335742,0.506679&panoid=CNsCiPsbdyzr2hyQD36pPg&cbp=12,279.91,,0,0.81

I remember nipping in here for a swift one before going into Maidstone one night in the late 80's and it was managed by an old couple who kept the place looking like their front room.  I eventually got my change after I'd finished my beer.

Think they did a roaring trade when the roads were being improved and then it shut and was bulldozed soon afterwards, I guess 1989 or 1990.

Thanks Smiler. I can only remember it as being closed. I hadn't thought that the fire might have been after that. Do you know when it closed?

Knew the pub well, the garden wall is still there, now Shep & Neame I think, used to have a long bench seat made from bus seats. Don`t recall a fire there but possibly vandalism after closing.

Fire at the Bridgewood Cottage pub, Chatham. 1980s?

Can anyone out there verify a childhood memory for me please? I remember my dad getting petrol from a garage just along the road from the Bridgewood Cottage pub (up near Blue Bell Hill) and I have vague memories of looking out the car window at a boarded up pub (the Bridgewood Cottage), which looked like it had had a fire. It was later demolished for the road improvements(?)

I would date this memory to around 1980ish.

Can anyone verify that there was a fire at the pub, and when that was? I've searched online, but with no luck.

Was that the reason it originally closed?

Thanks
