I remember that confectioners at 126 Luton Road very well and can confirm that basic groceries were sold, in the late 50s and early 60s at least.

Here's the list of grocers (as opposed to greengrocers) in 1955

Attwood W.T. - 300 Luton Rd
Baker Wm.C.T. - 64
Bays P. & Co.Ltd - 263
Butler's Stores - 395
Hallett Mrs. M.E. - 174

Greengrocers

Bryant Chas. Wm. - 266 Luton Rd.
Cattee Sydney - 54
Dallas Albt - 134
Fisher Edwd. Geo - 316
Hazell Albt. Jn. - 40
Seal Mrs.N.C. - 299
Weller Jas.F. - 198
White Derek J. - 180/182

The only possible Taylor I can find in Luton Road is:

Taylor Miss Ada - 126.  This is listed as a CONFECTIONER. Perhaps the business diversified over the years & at one point is was a grocers?

Hope this helps.

The nearest Kelly's I have is 1959 and I can't see a greengrocers there, although number 164 is listed as Miss E.F. Gallaway, draper so the shop may have changed hands by then.

There was a wool shop owned by a Mrs.Taylor which my mother would use in the early 1950s,  possibly house no.164 in the link. Kelly's owners please step forward!

Hi,
Can anyone help me i'm researching my family tree and as part of that i'm trying to find out about a grocers store that was somewhere in Luton Rd in the 1940's / 1950's. My brother seems to think it was called Taylors. Does anyone have any recollections of this shop and exactly where it was? Is it still a shop of some sort?
Chris
