I attended the junior school in the eighties, and the cottage homes were still being used then as old peoples homes

I attended the junior school from '61 to '64. I'm pretty sure at that time the cottage homes were being used as old peoples residences.

Ps, I was having issues with the map of the area so did a bit more digging on old. Maps and now makes sense.  For some reason beresford av, was where Wyles road is now. it obviously moved at some stage.  Same as landsdowne road, just completely moved, I am assuming this was easy as one was in Chatham and now in Rochester?

I am not sure how to post pics so uploaded to a gallery if anyone wants to see http://gallery.me.com/mattyjoyce#100065/IMG_0159

Interesting

Thanks for the pic, I can now see where things are, I think lol.  The house on the left does look like the remaining house here which is now an adolescent centre, it is at the top of Balfour road next to where the school used to be,  wonder if it is that actual house, difficult to say.

Thanks anyway, brilliant stuff.

Managed to find this picture. These are the Medway Cottage Homes, now demolished and originally built for poor and orphaned children. The view is from about the middle of what is now Beresford Avenue, looking south. What was later to become Balfour Junior school is on the far left, the building centre left is the only survivor.

Hi Joycey,

I used to go to that school! I could probably dig out some maps but haven't got any pics, sorry. (I'm sure somebody will though).

Hi all,

Just came across this site and wow, some great photos and stories of Medway

I am not local so do not know the area very well, I have moved to Balfour road and wondered if anyone had any old pics of the roads or area (any date really, or the history of the this part of Chatham, why is it called Balfour ? Etc etc

I know where my house now is there was a school there but not found any pics of it, what was here before the school I wonder.

thanks in advance

matt Joyce
