News: “Over the graves of the Druids and under the wreck of Rome,
Rudely but surely they bedded the plinth of the days to come.
Behind the feet of the Legions and before the Norseman’s ire
Rudely but greatly begat they the framing of State and Shire
Rudely but deeply they laboured, and their labour stand till now.
If we trace on ancient headlands the twist of their eight-ox plough.”

The TA centre has now been completly demolished, the demolition company have found one cache of old ordinance.
Another one to go. Still dont know whats going to be built on the site, we have have one of everything already, could be another Tescos we only have seven.

Would appear that the special needs school has shut, the site has been sealed of with heras fencing. As yet have seen no planning application for the site. The site next door which was the Ozonic drinks company in the 1950s now being developed as a Mc Donalds.
Now if Mc Donalds charge a deposit on the packing as the Ozonic used to on the bottles, i could land up being a rich grumpy old man.

While on the subject of drill halls, there was another one in Wilson Road Ramsgate, and another just off Hawley Square Margate. Plus one in Victoria rd Margate which is still in use by the ATC & the Army Cadets.

grumpy no just saying the truth. There was some doubt about funding for the School. Wont say what the locals think about the place it might upset people./

Without any shadow of doubt Doug, you are the Forum's Grumpy Old Man  :)

Am I right in thinking that the school there has shut now as well?

The stencilled writing as mentioned earlier.

Suggest you take your pics now, The fire station next door is shut, the site to the other side of the drill hall is going to be a MCdONALDS [ Just what we need more litter] it wont be long before somebody wants to built another shed there, and the good old council will help the developer to get the site for peanuts, the same as they did with the houses that used to be on the other side of the road.

There is another (still used) TA drill hall in Margate, used by the Home Guard in WW2. I think it's Victoria Road?

Is any trace of that stencilling still visible?

That has, however, given me a lead - this was posted on the BBc Peoples War by Thanet Libraries:

"I was called up in March 1942 and did my 6 weeks’ training in Wales. I was in REME (mechanical engineers) and trained as a driver....I came from Liverpool but was posted to Kent, billeted in the Westwood Drill Hall which also contained all our garages and workshops for the Regiment. This was in the Infantry Division. We used to repair any damage to vehicles. Some of us were then posted to Nonnington College and did training in the surrounding fields."

There was some military stencilling on a side wall about not washing down vehicles which ties in with this.

Was this the same building that was the drill Hall for 5 Queens in the 1970s , Think it was "B" Coy?

Couldn't tell you Seafordpete, I'm not a Thanet local - it's something I've been meaning to bring up for a while so I hopped over the fence recently whilst the missus was shopping.
