News: “Over the graves of the Druids and under the wreck of Rome,
Rudely but surely they bedded the plinth of the days to come.
Behind the feet of the Legions and before the Norseman’s ire
Rudely but greatly begat they the framing of State and Shire
Rudely but deeply they laboured, and their labour stand till now.
If we trace on ancient headlands the twist of their eight-ox plough.”

Pilot Officer Robert Henry Shaw RAFVR.
Born Bolton, 28th July 1916. Posted missing 3rd September 1940.
Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, panel 10.
At  the time of his death P/O Shaw was serving with No. 1 Squadron RAF based at RAF Tangmere, the squadron flying the Hawker Hurricane.

P/O Shaw's Hurricane (No. P3782) crashed at Parkhouse Farm, Chart Sutton at 11.30 on the morning of Tuesday, the 3rd September 1940. The wreckage was partly cleared shortly after, but no human remains were found then or in a later excavation in 1987. At the time of the crash there was a possible sighting of P/O Shaw drifting out to sea under his parachute.

The crash site is now marked by a memorial garden at which an annual memorial service is held.
