News: “Over the graves of the Druids and under the wreck of Rome,
Rudely but surely they bedded the plinth of the days to come.
Behind the feet of the Legions and before the Norseman’s ire
Rudely but greatly begat they the framing of State and Shire
Rudely but deeply they laboured, and their labour stand till now.
If we trace on ancient headlands the twist of their eight-ox plough.”

Was it "Lewis's"?

I used to go there every so often as a boy and for 3d. the butcher would allow me to fill a carrier bag of sawdust for my quinea pig hutch! I think the flats are the original building, converted into flats perhaps.

any one remember when there was a old butchers here? before the new flats were built? a few years a go my friend nick lived in that ground  floor flat, just in side the door is a hatch in the floor, underneath is a big open space with the remains of what looks like the old cellar? and in the road out side if u look, is a  metal grid buried in the tarmac. i remember the butchers open and all the joints of meat hanging up. i also remember the place derelict for many years, then seeboard breaking in to remove the meter for some reason? and leaving the place unsecured then years later been demolished? i wander what it was call?
