Johnson and Co Canterbury Brewery
I have an old beer bottle which is embossed Johnson and Co of Canterbury in my collection. Johnson and Co although supplying the local market in bottled and casked beers were a big exporter. On their advertisng posters they quote Sydney, Shanghai, Gibraltar, Calais, Cape town and Venezuela etc and awards were made in London, Paris and Hanover, in fact there brews were so popular their labels were copied fraudulently as far away as Australia! The brewery in Northgate street was sold in 1898 and then became the Canterbury brewery Co. I have an old advertising drinking glass from this brewery and the same logo as Johnsons, an invicta horse, is etched into the glass with the new company name in place of the old. Info gleaned from 'Kentish brewers and the brewers of Kent' by Peter Moynihan.

Note..see book reviews thread for further details of this superb publication. The front cover carries advertising for Johnsons by coincidence.
