As a cab driver in the towns, myself and the others doing night shifts went there or the coffee stall in Chatham many times. Ate some weird stuff like pancakes and ice cream with maple syrup on. :)
And then I wondered why I couldn't sleep when I got home!

Just like those people in the film, I can remember driving down to 'Farthing Corner'
in the 60s for a coffee on a nice evening.  :)

Back in the 80's it was a post-pub venue for me and my mates.  A big, greasy dog-burger and an Operation Wolf marathon.....class!   :)

Here are some links showing photos taken from a 'Look at Life' programme showing the opening of Farthing Corner:

And here's a link to the programme itself on iPlayer:

It's viewable until next Monday (1 July) and the section on the Medway services is only on for a minute at about 12 mins through, but it's worth seeing.  I watch ALL these Britain On Films.  Fascinating stuff.

Yes Bonniebee I do remember the mosaic road map on the Farthing corner services and it was on the East bound side that I remember it from, so it was obviously on both sides.
My friends and I used to visit the services area in the 60's soon after we all passed our driving tests and used to meet there for a coffee or whatever.
Must admit though that I have no idea when or where it went but it might be covered up with something.
Only time will tell when the whole lot is knocked down perhaps.

(Continued from previous posting).....it stood next to the services building.

It was a separate structure approx 7 feet high by 16 feet across on the level above the car park.  I don't know if it was on both sides but I have a photo which indicates that it was taken on the 'westbound' side of the motorway.  I have a postcard of it called 'Top Rank Motorway Service M2 Farthing Corner Kent' taken in the 60s presumably when it was first opened.  Does anyone know what happened to it?

I remember a mosaic by the steps from the carpark up to the floor level outside.
It was on the London bound side but I expect there was one both sides.
I have not been in there this year though.

Bonniebee2012, can you describe the location of the map? Was it on the side of a building or a separate structure? If we know the old location, someone might be able to have a look. It might have been rendered over or something if it was on the side of a building.

Does anyone remember the mosaic road map that was outside of the service station in the 1960s?  If so, do you know what happened to it and, if it still exists, where is it now?
