I believe that this club was the Lower Liberal Club, (1970) before it moved across the road & became the Walnut Tree Club.

Without meaning to be pedantic, it's a Mosque, not a Temple. Sorry, I'll get me coat :)

The Temple as it was and as it is today.

It is still a Temple, it was the Liberal Club years ago.
The regulars have chipped in thousands to upgrade it.
Last year during the Queen`s Jubilee they decked it in Union Jacks and opened the doors to locals for free Asian Food, good people.

I went past here the other day and it looks like it is not being knocked down after all, it looks more like it is being converted into something, ie, flats perhaps.

Misseda Paeg, the building next to the club was a hair dressers at one time, so I was told, this maybe the one you were talking about.

A very interesting subject to me, having grown up in the area. Many thanks, for reviving some memories, to all of the contributors here.
As I moved away from the area in 1970, & having been living in Europe for many years, I must admit that my memory isn't so good...
However, I do remember often passing the, "Lower Gillingham Liberal & Radical Club & Institute" club, where the doors were often wide open revealing the very smoky interior & sometimes bingo in progress. I often used to pass by, either after getting off the 145 or 146 bus at the Shalders stop (anyone know when the pub closed?), or going for fish & chips at Alan Chrisfields or a haircut (a couple of doors up from the club).

Thanks Colin, I thought it was. I grew up in the area and always wondered why the end house on Richmond Road had those marks on it. The pub and the terrace along Medway Road had been demolished and Shalder House was still being built when we moved into the area - in about 1972 I think.

Was the pub across the road, on the opposite corner of Richmond Road, called the Shalder Arms? I'm sure it was as the former care home was called Shalder House and the houses which once ran along Medway Road were called Shalder Terrace.

Bilgerat, the pub was where part of the care home is. On the end house you can see where the roof of the pub was.

Chatham & District timetable showed it as Shalders Arms or Shalder's Arms - the reproduction in the book I've got is too small to be sure.

I couldn't find it in any directories - then realized the building is listed as being in Medway Road :)

1937 (and probably earlier, that's just my first directory)

Lower Gillingham Liberal & Radical Club & Institute Ltd.

Still listed as such in 1971, gone by 1973.

My last directory in 1974 still has no listing, so presumably it stood empty for a few years.

I think this was the old Walnut Tree Club site.

It could well be, Redge, after all they are not far away from there.

I think that it used to be a working men's club called the Shoulder's Arms in the 60s.

Missedapaeg, you are not getting this place muddled up with The Sould Arms pub that was on the otherside of the road where Shoulder House is are you?
