I have the same picture from the Les Collins's post card collection. Having zoomed in the initials SMI and the start of a T; are clear on the shop in line with the Tram post on the right hand side.
I'll see if I can post the enlarged section.

You are correct Leofwine, the Richard Cobden is in the photo. The houses on the left of the photo were knocked down and replaced by flats. Also on the left hand side behind the high wall is the Invicta Social Club, which is still there today. Further along the road on the right hand side is the Co-op store, not sure if it was there when this photo was taken? I have absolutely no idea of the date, or if indeed there was a Smitherman's Grocers, would love to know.

Thank you! :)

Is the tall building towards the centre back the Richard Cobden pub?  And I think the date must be a little out as there appear to be tram tracks, and if I remember correctly the tram service did not start until 1902?  Not sure if this helps narrow down the date/location?

I just saw a photo on Medway archives, saying that there used to be a greengrocers somewhere on Luton Road called Smithers. Does anyone have any information please? I have already looked on the retail section on here, but could not find anything. I won`t put the photo up as I am not sure if I am allowed to copy it or not?

Thank you,

Sandi
