There are culverts and drains like this all over the Chatham Lines defences. There is a similar one visible at the Hornwork. There appears to have been a very well thought out surface water drainage system that drained into the ditches and used the natural slopes of the hill to channel the water down eventually to the river.

During the excavations in the Spur Battery courtyard we found a culvert that appears to run under the casemates and drain into here, draining the area in front of the magazine, and the courtyard in general.

Yes this is the drainage culvert, we cleared it a few years ago for a closer look.

A couple of pictures of the mystery shaft where it opens in the ditch.

Thanks for that merc, I wonder if there are others around the fort, i.e. in front of the pit on the main barrier ditch?
We didn't find anything like it when we dug the pit out in the early 90's, but I suppose we weren't exactly looking out for anything like it though at the time.

Hi flintlock1, if I remember correctly, it's some kind of drainage culvert for the pit in front of the flanking galleries. Kyn noticed the air shaft marked on the map several years ago, and we helped clear the ditches too.

Hi All,
Does anyone know anything about the Air Shaft marked on Leofwine's copy of the 1879 O/S map? (http://www.kenthistoryforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=13468.msg108982#msg108982)
Its in the Ditch, in front of the sunken courtyard Gun Positions.
