I think Platform 9 was demolished around 1983. I know it was the subject of a trip to the High Street as part of the 'Medway Studies' subject at school (which was for only one school year, 1981/82), and I still have the picture that I drew as part of the homework.

I'm sure someone out there will know the exact date of the demolition!

Perhaps not relevant to this topic directly, but given the discussion around adjacent properties....................

I took this photo of No. 250, Platform 9 just before it was demolished, and the Fountain closed as a pub. ( Platform 9 sold fashion boots.)

Stupidly, I failed to date it!  Doh!

Yes, i am pleased to help.

See the picture as in the Directory and you can see that number 252 was a boot repairers then in 1965

@ KeithJG - as you mention having bought the Kellys Directory for 1965, I wonder if you could let me know what the Oxfam shop was back then, please.
- I'd be interested to know as I worked there, in the early 1970s, occasionally as a relief manager when it was a shoe repair shop known as "Continental";
and I was just wondering if it was a shoe repair shop in 1965.

Well........i am here to correct my mistake.....Lol

I have just bought a Kellys Directory of Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood, Rainham and Neigbourhood  1965

The first thing i looked at was Di Marco`s and it says number 254...which is not the Oxfam shop but the NAILS shop next door.

The numbers are correct as the Fountain Public House was 248

You can see the number on the newly painted shop front from Google Maps 2014

DiMarco at Chatham was very narrow downstairs, as you entered the counter was on the left, a compact serving area, made even more limited by small round top glass tables against the opposite wall. If you went to the back of the shop, again a very compact area, you had to mind the step! Just past the counter was a very steep stairway to the upper area. As you so rightly say Tulafalula wonderfully creamy ice cream, plus my favourite toasted tea buns/cakes.
My one compensation for shopping with Mum, how I detested it? Being dragged round Woolies.
Best of all was Pains toy window, the wonder of all those Dinky Toys.
PS. Anyone remember Doughtys toy/sports shop.

You do describe DiMarco exactly as i remember it in 1961...my Father had just remarried and my stepmother use to take me there for a toasted teacake during shopping.

It was opposite Batchelor Street in the High Street and it is now this blue Oxfam shop in the centre of the picture.

I do remember the very narrow entrance and it was quite pokey inside and upstairs.

Hi Wardy
Don't be sorry! All our memories fade over time, you should read some of the howlers I have posted.
:).Its only by our mistakes we get to the true picture of things, so keep posting. By the way, is that shop still there???? :)

Smiler,
Definitely recall some sort of stall at that point, made of plywood and hardboard, very insubstantial, painted white, staff not very hygiene orientated.
Did it sell ice Lollies ?

Can't remember the name of the ice cream but I'm thinking early 50s when the stall was there.

Off track a bit, El Dorado ice cream was sold at the cafe/bakery at Shirley Avenue,Davis Estate in the 1950s maybe early 60s.
