The headmaster of Warren Wood CS Boys School, Mr P. Southam, lived in this road. I went to Warren Wood until 1966.

Neither of those two pictures do justice to how steep the hill is at the top where it joins the Chatham-Maidstone Road  :)

I had the pleasure(?) of having to do my hill-start on this road when taking my second driving test back in the late 1960s. It came as rather a nasty surprise as my first test was held at the Gillingham centre and the hill start was performed on Rock Avenue which is hardly a hill at all. Despite a rather jerky start, it was performed to the satisfaction of the examiner.

Is there any rhyme or reason to any of the road names in this but, Purbeck? Wyles? Also I notice a house on Purbeck is called Rotherfield. Any idea why?

The grocers shop was Suttons, I went to school with one their sons and we shopped there and at Jaydees a lot. We used Hygates further down Dale Street as well.

Walked down Athelstan Road yesterday where I lived for 25 years until the mid 80s then along my old school walking route via Purbeck Road, Gladstone Road and Dale Street to St Michael's school. There were three shops on the junction of Dale Street and Gladstone Road, only one left now but the name board of another has been exposed, picture below. There were other shops down Dale Street, all now gone including the Asian shop that even opened Christmas Day!

Jaydees - that's the name I remember. Walked past it every day for years on the way to school, but can't remember ever going in there.

Wyles Road starts off pretty shallow and then the gradient gets bigger and bigger as you get towards the top, making a hill start a little tricky.

My mother once tried to take me to Chatham Football Ground just after she passed her Driving Test.  She had to stop as the second car from the top of the hill and then when the first car went off, she cooked the clutch of our car with her attempts to move off.  Eventually she got going in a cloud of clutch smoke  :)

That shop was, I think, known as jaydees in the late 60s and 70s.

I lived at 16 Wyles Road for about three years during the 1970s, that's about half way up on the left hand side. It hadn't changed much by then. I think my brother did a paper round for that newsagent before we actually moved there. Looking at the 2012 Google street level image, I see that, not only the newsagent has closed, but the grocers shop on the opposite corner has also.

Can't quite make out the shop name, is it Lake?

Interesting modern comparison from Google street view:

I am not very good at guessing dates but I would suggest 50s.

Yes it would be lovely to have as little traffic as there was then!
