Varleys Shop is closing soon (Feb 2015). The large advertising sign over the shop has been removed, showing the old wooden weather boarding. The Wackett name is still visable.

Here is a photo taken a few days ago.

My Grandparents owned Wackett Brothers, they also had shops in Strood, Sheerness and Peckham. Wackett was my Grandmothers maiden name. Photo of my Grandfather outside the Strood shop, hopefully attached.

It has a Dickensian sound to it, don't you think?

The idea of 'Wackett Brothers'. But I can see now that it is on the weather boarding.

So my boss was right, but where did you get the idea, Colin?
You can just make out the name on the weather-boards above the windows.
Yes, I can see that now. Thanks.

I wonder when that shop front was last exposed?  Interestingly looking at Google Street View, the timbers on side of the building are absolutely rotten, the building must be letting in water.

1937 Kelly's Directory:

302 & 304  WACKETT BROS. (RADIO & CYCLES) LTD. radio, cycle & electrical engineers

1955  Kelly's Directory:

302 & 304 VARLEY G. & E. A. cycle dlrs.

Not sure when Varley's took over or when they stopped selling cycles & became the electrical business that most of us know them as.

Nice spot colin haggart :)

The name is vaguely familiar and my wife thinks they were there before Varley's, but it's a big THINK and auto-suggestion can't be ruled out.

I came across this today,  Varley's has been there for about sixty years, has anyone heard of Wackett Brothers?
