Has anyone got any inside info for a heads up of when the Chimney at Kingsnorth is to be blown. Earlier this year they said September.
Hope they give a bit more notice than when they demolished the boiler house.Released time to the press a couple of hours before they blew it.

The demolition of Kingsnorth chimney is due today at about 1pm.  Please check this before you go as I wasn't paying much attention to the radio this morning but I am sure that is what was said.  Someone grab some pics for us all :)

I worked for SGB then. Earned about 1200 a week. A lot of money then.
Come to think of it, it's still a lot of money.
It's about 5300 today!

In the early 80s I earned a lot of money working in Kingsnorth. As a scaffolder, we erected working platforms when they shut down the boilers for maintenance.
We worked 12 hour shifts, and 7 days. Used to last about a month, as I remember.

I heard an unconfirmed claim from a parish cllr at Grain, the chimney will come down next October.
Some of the metal cladding from the conveyor towers at Kingsnorth has been dismantled so it's happening albeit a death by thousand cuts...

RE Kingsnorth ...It`s been part of the Medway skyline all my life so will be sad to see it go.
I'm following the demolition and trying to take as many pics as possible from the Gillingham Country Park Side to document the breakdown.
Noticed the first signs today looking back at a Pic I took earlier this year seeing the conveyers for the coal from the jetty disappearing
A project and I think will be worthwile..

One of my Uncles was involved with the building of the Big Chimney. He drove a steam pile driver and was responsible for the base. Seems like it was a million years ago, early 1970's though was it not? I for one shall miss them.
