An area of land in the south of the Isle of Grain was secured by the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (later to become BP) in 1948.
By 1953 a huge crude oil-refining complex had been constructed with oil-processing beginning in the same year. The majority of the oil came from the middle east with smaller amounts coming from Libya, Nigeria and South America.
To begin with the company could refine 4,500,000 tons annually this later increasing to 11,000,00 tons. There were nine jetties able to take the largest oil tankers of the time and three smaller jetties.
The refinery closed on the 27th August 1982. Part of the site was then used by British Gas Plc for the storage of liquefied natural gas.

Two British Path films shot at Grain.
