Sad to see the passing of Aylesford mills. I spent many an interesting hour with the engineers down on the shop floor when I was a sales engineer covering Kent & Sussex. In those days- late 60's- it was said that no one in Maidstone didn't know someone who worked there.

There's a look at what was left of the Aylesford mill as of July this year in this link.

Smiler. Sad to see all the papermills in Aylesford gone. When I returned for a couple of years to Maidstone in 1966 there was a saying that there was no one in Maidstone didn't know someone who worked there! A bit like the Medway Towns and "The Yard". As Alan H says, where do all the people work now?

Aylesford mill closed a couple of months back, kept on about 20 to clear up. Reckon on being finished end of Sept then probably sold for housing.

I believe that Kimberly-Clark are still in operation at Northfleet. Also the Townsend Hook Mill at Snodland?

Correct on both accounts. Townsend Hook (now Kappa Smurfitt) has just invested in a new state of the art paper machine  :)

What about the Imperial mill at Gravesend or the Bowaters at Northfleet? Or the Kimberley Clark mill at Aylesford (I think)? Are any of these still operating?
I worked at all 3 back in the 60s after finishing my apprenticeship at Blaw Knox.
I'm shocked that just so much industry appears to have gone from the UK. I left in 1972 and had a short stay back in the late 70s but came back to Oz and haven't bothered returning since a holiday in '89.
Where does everyone work when so many factories appear to have closed?
AlanH.

There is a Paper Mill at Chartham that make specialist paper. The old Townsend Hook mill at Snodland is about to restart producing paper soon having installed a new machine PM9.
If it cant be mended with a hammer, it must be an electrical fault, bash it anyway.

Sittingbourne Mill has not only closed, the whole site including the water tower was flattened and is now a Morrisons Supermarket and a large area of wasteland with a mountain of hardcore awaiting the usual covering with high density housing.
Dont quote me but I think Kemsley is the only mill still producing paper.

Has anyone news of Aylesford Paper Mill, I am told there is no longer any paper produced on this site.
I also note Sittingbourne Mill has closed, Is Kemsley the only paper mill left in Kent ?
