News: “Over the graves of the Druids and under the wreck of Rome,
Rudely but surely they bedded the plinth of the days to come.
Behind the feet of the Legions and before the Norseman’s ire
Rudely but greatly begat they the framing of State and Shire
Rudely but deeply they laboured, and their labour stand till now.
If we trace on ancient headlands the twist of their eight-ox plough.”

The anti aircraft site is now either demolished or buried after the rail link was built. I believe the circular structure that remains is part of the sewage treatment works that was built for the attached camp at Northumberland Bottom. As for the other camp remains, there are the original concrete boundary fence posts on the Southern perimeter, a small building in a neighbouring field and in the South Western corner, a concrete oblong structure in the brambles, which from the looks of it was a light anti aircraft position.

In the 1950s there was still an 'Army base' around that area. I remember (during the Suez crisis) the remarkable sight of Army lorries going out there from Milton barracks in their drab green and coming back in desert yellow! There was also a very tall radio mast.
