News: “Over the graves of the Druids and under the wreck of Rome,
Rudely but surely they bedded the plinth of the days to come.
Behind the feet of the Legions and before the Norseman’s ire
Rudely but greatly begat they the framing of State and Shire
Rudely but deeply they laboured, and their labour stand till now.
If we trace on ancient headlands the twist of their eight-ox plough.”

I saw him at the Empire when he wore an enormous tie with a windmill on it. The sails revolved whenever he wanted. I was told that Arthur English always ended his act with "Open the cage  etc......"  because he couldn`t sing, which is how most of his contemporaries ended their music hall acts.

Yes Arthur was a proper spiv with his wide lapels and gaudy tie. I never saw him in Chatham but do remember him from the box many years ago. Was he a local lad or a comic paid to travel and perform there do you know?

I can remember seeing Arthur English at the Chatham Empire a number of times, always finished his act by saying "open the cage mother I'm coming home", after the show we always went to Military road to the Milky bar for a milk squash.
