Boulton Paul Defiant Mk ll. No. AA377 of No. 264 Squadron RAF based at RAF West Malling.
While carrying out gunnery practice at the Leysdown gunnery range the aircraft went into a vertical dive from 2,500ft. The pilot attempted to pull out at 500ft and the aircraft went into a flat spin and burst into flames as it hit the ground some two miles south of the range.
Both crew members were killed.

Flight Sergeant Wallace G Lewis. RAAF. Pilot. Age 22.

Flight Sergeant William Mair. RAFVR. Air Gunner. Age 27.

Both buried at St Clements Churchyard Leysdown Sheppey.
