Ashurst, St Martin of Tours

In the churchyard of St Martin of Tours, Ashurst, there is a grave to someone by the name of Morris. The headstone is badly spalled but that which can be read is intriguing......

R (last letter of Christian name) MORRIS
VE SERVICE (presumably active service)
RIL (i.e April) 1938

There is one other name on the headstone but is too broken up to read. It seems therefore that he is remembered rather than buried here.  So far I haven't found any candidates for this person although two so far unidentified Policemen were killed in Palestine this month - any suggestions?
