News: “Over the graves of the Druids and under the wreck of Rome,
Rudely but surely they bedded the plinth of the days to come.
Behind the feet of the Legions and before the Norseman’s ire
Rudely but greatly begat they the framing of State and Shire
Rudely but deeply they laboured, and their labour stand till now.
If we trace on ancient headlands the twist of their eight-ox plough.”

Lock Street/Cross Street, Gillingham
My questions about some other street names in Gillingham/New Brompton threw up that what is now called Lock Street shows up on the 1869 and 1879 OS Maps as Cross Street. There is another street between Britton Street and James Street also called Cross Street (which still bears that name today). I can understand one being renamed to avoid confusion, but I wondered if anyone knew the following:

1) When the name was changed? (It is on the 1879 Map as Cross Street and 1896 as Lock Street, so somewhere between those two dates.)

2) Who or what is the Lock it was named after?
