Fred the needle, in my copy of KM Souvenir, Chatham Observer, on page 8 is  exactly the same photo and the caption is
 "Door to door  delivery ,---Mr and Mrs. K. A. Makin of Nicklebury Close Rochester needed a sense of humour when the baker " dropped in " at their front door when his delivery van skidded in the snow bound road  "

Does anyone know where the picture Merc posted of the Co-op bakery van was taken?  Reason is, I think I recognise the woman in it and the landscape looks about right for the area she lived in at the time.

She told a story about something crashing into her house that was on a bend on a hill - mind you if it had been in a published picture than she'd have been on about it all the time  :)

Depends on how the length is measured; length of below freezing temperatures, falling snow, snow lying on ground? But I'm sure no winter since 1947 has had such a severe overall effect.

As I remember it 1947 was colder but didn't last too long.  In 1963 I thought I'd never see summer again, the snow hung around for three months.

Hi Merc, I was a Telegram Boy in Chatham in that bad winter(see Medway Memories). It was a bit hairy when we had to go to rural areas and Weedswood, but we had a laugh.  It seem to go on for ever.

Kyn , thanks for that .now I have a little problem .My  cheapy printer ( its probably me !!) doesn't  give me a good picture from the old newspaper of 1963 winter,which is  well yellowed ,when I compare it with other photos in the KHF
Is it possible for some kind person to do this for me ?? (I will take the blame if there is a snag .)
I could pop it in to any one on Sheppey ,Sittingbourne or near .
what do you think ??

I have a 4 page newspaper report from the Chatham Observer 1963 " Never in 200 years has the weather been so severe , since December 22nd  Kent has been plunged. into Artic condition....Temp 14 degrees F-- .3 foot of snow --............. " ( beats your 1946 ??) With 30 approx photos of Kent .

Blimey !!! that IS cold !!!
14F = -10C. It was -19C at Tunbridge Wells in 1946-47!

I have a 4 page newspaper report from the Chatham Observer 1963

Hi CDP,

Would you be able to scan and post the pages if it doesn't breach copyright rules?

Cheers.
