Having watched the series Trains-with Pete Waterman it would now seem that he actually saved the railways despite a lot of opposition at the time to the famous Beeching Axe.

My husband has always loved steam trains.
Some years ago, whilst researching my husband's family I discovered his ancestor called Angelica Beeching, who married James Washford at Shadoxhurst in 1815.   The Beeching tree on which Angelica appears also includes distant relation Dr Richard Beeching!   Romney Marsh area.

Richard Beeching was born in Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent.
Doctor Beeching as he became known, for his Doctoring and cutting the Railways in 1955.
He did not cause the closing of the Sheppey Llght Railway "Queenborough to Leysdown" though, that closed some four years befor.
