Hi all.

A fascinating thread.

Some of the names mentioned above ring a bell, I just wonder if i re-call them from the display/exhibits at Headcorn aerodrome museum? This museum which only opens Sundays and Bank Holidays has got remains/parts from many a crashed aircraft, well worth a visit.

Some more WWII shots -

13 Aug 1940 Do17Z from 7/KG2 at Paxton Farm, Stodmarsh. Shot down by the RAF during a raid on Eastchurch. Uffz Vogel, Arndt, Mahringer, and Gfr Bahr all POW's. Based Caen or Cambrai-Epinoy.


16 Aug 1940 Two photographs of Dornier Do17Z3 of 7/KG76 crashed at Moatlands, Brenchley after colliding with a Hurricane of 111sqn piloted by Flt Lt H.M. Ferris over Marden after an attack on Hornchurch. Obfw Wachter, Riedel, and Brauer + Fw Klumb all missing. Based at Cormeilles en Vexin. Fl
t Lt Ferris was killed when his Hurricane R4193 crashed at Sheephurst Farm, Marden.



16 Aug 1940 Two photographs of Messerschmitt Bf110C of 6/ZG26 force landed at Platts Heath, Lenham after being shot down by P/O Mounsdon. Oblt Hellmuth and Fw Winter both killed.



26 Aug 1940 Dornier 17Z U5+GK of 2/KG2 crashed 2 miles SW of Eastchurch after being attacked over Hornchurch. Maj Gutzmann (Gruppe Kdr), Uffz Buhr, Schmolzer POW's. Oblt Hertel killed.


5 Sept 1940 Messerschmitt Bf109E4 1480 of II/JG3 force landed at Loves Farm, Winchet Hill, Marden. The pilot Oblt von Werra was the only aircrew POW to escape back to Germany. As an identified escapee he was shipped to Canada but esaped into neutral USA and was repatriated.


23 Nov 1940 Messerschmitt Bf109E 4010 of 5/JG53 hit a tree whilst attempting to force land at Smeeth Railway Station. Lt. O. Zeuner POW.


Not a Kent crash but displayed in Oct 1940 in Rootes of Maidstone was this Messerschmitt Bf109E of I/JG77 that had bee shot down near Brighton.

The full transcripts for the pics of the 109's are -

1. 'One of RAF Manston's 60ft trailers was used to transport Oberleutnant Albrecht Dresz's Messerschmitt Bf109 shot down at Hengrove near Margate, while escorting bombers raiding Manston on 12 August 1940.'

2. 'Escorting Ju88's attacking RAF Manston on 24 August 1940, Oberfeldwebel F. Beeck, of 6/JG51, managed to force land his Messerschmitt Bf109E-4 afer combat with Hurricane of No.32 sqn. his fighter crashed beside the Dover-Deal road and he was captured unhurt.'

3. 'The RAF
 were soon to learn the secrets of the latest Messerschmitt Bf109F fighter, when Hauptmann Rolf Peter Pingel, of 1/JG26, made a forced landing in a cornfield near St Margarets on 10 July 1941.'

Consulting 'Aircraft casualties in Kent Pt1 1939-40' reveals -

1. 12/08/40 Me109E-1 III/JG54 Margate, Hengrove Force landed after combat with 32sqn Hurricanes (Crossley) near Dover. Oblt Drehs missing. Based Guines.

2. 24/08/40 Me109E-4 5587 6/JG51 East Langdon Salton Close Farm. Force landed due to engine failure after combat with RAF fighters over Manston. Obfw F. Beeck may have been shot down by 56sqn (Wicks) to be a POW. Based Deserves.

Wanting to know if it was possible to find out a little  more about the downed 109's.I took the liberty of
linking this Topic in a Personal Message to a very good Luftwaffe Expert in my German Forum.

Die Maschine auf Bild 9 ist mit größter Wahrscheinlichkeit
die Bf 109 E-4, weiße <- des Stabes III./JG 54 von
Oblt. Albrecht Dreß, der am 12.8.40 nach LK bei Margate
notlanden mußte und in KG ging.

Zur JG 51-Maschine finde ich gerade nichts. Da stimmen
irgendwelche Daten nicht.

Aber die F-2, Werknr. 12764, schwar
ze << ist die Maschine
von Hptm. Rolf Pingel, Gruppenkommandeur der I./JG 26,
notgelandet bei St. Margaret's Bay in Kent nach LK mit
Spitfire und Short Stirling.

JG 54 picture was ,with high probability,flown by Oberleutenant Albrecht Dreß III/JG 54.

JG 51 picture does'nt seem to fit in with mentioned date.

Had a look in the Junkers production Lists ,seems D 899 was'nt very lucky :o

G24, 904
built at Limhamn
ABA Schweden, S-AAAX, 1925, operated for Sachsische Luftverkehrs AG
LUFTHANSA, D-899, 1926, "Juno", crashed in February 1929 at Epinais/France

Frinstead nr Sittingbourne - 19/20 May 1918 Gotha bomber shot down by SE5a from 143 sqn Detling and a Bristol Fighter from 141 sqn Biggin Hill.


Handley Page 0/400 made an emergency landing at Horton Kirby nr Dartford 1921


Armstrong Whitworth Argosy of Imperial Airways developing a fuel leak emergency lands at Egerton nr Pluckley 8 December 1926.


Junkers G23 of Lufthansa after making a emergency landing at Penshurst 15 May 1925


Vickers Virginia J8240 of 7 sqn force landed at Point Corner Plaxtol 16 June 1927.


Imperial Airways H.P.W 10 G-EBMT City of London crashed into the sea at Dungeness on 17 June 1929. Seven passengers were killed. Two crew ad another for passengers were rescued by Folkestone trawler Lady.


Lufthansa Junkers D.899 force landed at Warren Street, Lenham early 1930's.


Imperial Airways HP42 Hannibal force landed at Tatlingbury Farm, Tudeley on 8 August 1931. The tail section was ripped off after striking a telegraph pole.


RAF trailer from Manston recovering Bf109 shot down at Hengrove Margate 12 Aug 1940.


Bf109E-4 of 6/JG51 shot down ad landed next to the Dover to Deal Road 24 Aug 1940.


Bf109F of 1/JG26 force landed at St Margarets 10 July 1941.
