Tree right. right! Your right, my left: -  It is a Flagpole in this earlier picture without the guy ropes you can see the hoisting rope. Probably the guys were added later as maybe the wind on the flag would have made the pole unsteard .

I posted a picture of the church on February 14th 2011 which seems to have disappeared into cyberspace as these things occasionally do, so here it is again. Any ideas as to the purpose of the large pole to the right of picture.

Derby Daily Telegraph 28 Apr 1937

VICAR FOUND SHOT TRAGIC DISCOVERY IN HIS GARDEN The Rev. Peter Thornton, Vicar of Boxley, near Maidstone, has been found shot dead in the vicarage garden. It is understood that a revolver was found near by. He was 50 years of age and a native of Co. Durham. He had been the Vicar of Boxley since January, 1935, and was formerly Vicar of Leysdown, Isle of Sheppey, where he also acted as Chaplain to the R.A.F., Eastchurch. During the war he served in the Royal Artillery and was wounded at Ypres in 1917. He leaves a widow.

You've just jogged my memory CDP. I'd completely forgotten that one of the Leysdown Vicars called a couple of times to our house when I was child.  He stopped for tea and used to show us children card tricks.  He had a small black car, and I have no idea why he visited us as we went to the Dockyard Church and lived in Sheerness.  His name eludes me for the moment, but I have a feeling that he committed suicide.

I must be careful here.
Many, many years ago I was contacted by a fairly local vicar who wanted a list of vicars of a Sheerness Church.
I went to his house and I handed the list that I had to him and then we started talking over a cup of tea .
He was very careful in his commemts but he said if I could look at the Register of Leysdown Church, I would be amazed  at the number of previous vicars of that church who had, resigned, died early, committed suicide, retired, etc . He was certain that something was wrong.
Is that the reason that the church was pulled down?????

I can't see a Leysdown church page so I'll slot this photo on here.

I love what appears to be a propped up tree to the left of the shot.Is that a flag pole or a radio mast there as well?Flag poles don't usually have Stays to hold them up.
