I believe the longer Christmas and Easter hols, and the shortening of the summer one, was so that schools were closed for longer in the cold weather, hence saving on heating bills.

Not too sure on this one, but my children seem to be at home way more than they are at school, when I was at school easter was at best a week off now it is 2, and christmas was only a couple of weeks, now it is 3, not to mention all of the "teacher training days", sorry I cannot help with the 1930's answers

This being school half term week, Mrs P and I are having an argument. She says half term was only about one day when she was at school, and she only had Good Friday and Easter Monday off, and just a few days at Christmas. I say it was longer than that. We both agree that the summer holiday was longer than it is now.

I'm sure we didn't come out of school till about 4.30pm, she says about 3.30pm. I went to Rochester Junior Tech School and we went in on Saturdays till 1pm.

Can anyone help to restore peace and tranquillity to the peterchall household? We are talking of the mid-1930s to mid-1940s.
