One of my favourite of Kent's many attractions. I made my annual pilgrimage here yesterday. it was the home of Vita Sackville-West and her husband the politician Harold Nicholson. Both notorious bi-sexuals they still managed a happy family life. Their grandson, the author, Adam Nicolson, still lives here and came out to meet the postman as I entered the gardens
Queen Elizabeth the First visited here during her reign and it was also used as a POW camp for French prisoners in the late 18th C.
Not a "castle"in the traditional sense, it's most famous for it's beautiful gardens developed by Vita & Harold it's
great value for the ?10.50 entrance fee and is of course free for NT Members.
