Judging from this newspaper article it was the building of the 'Birdcage' barracks that caused the Grand Magazine to cease being used for its original function.

Morning Advertiser - Wednesday 10 April 1867

CHATHAM, APRIL.9.
It appears it is intended to store the gunpowder at present kept in the grand magazine at Brompton at Upnor magazines, the grand magazine being used for some other purpose—for stores probably—to which the proximity of the new married quarters for the 3rd Depot Battalion will not be a cause of danger.

Hi all, I am the daughter of Epsom and I took him down to the Fort for a trip out recently. He does not get to do much as his sight is not very good but we heard some people talking that the materials for this restoration were not very good and that corners had been cut during the restoration. I did not take much notice at the time but having to read the posts that interest Dad we remembered the conversation.

I am glad I am no longer associated with them, "restoration" is not first on their list of things to do, nor is a lot of other important things.

Seems I was right in my last post about this structure and the area on top of it, they were not renovated as historical buildings! they were rebuilt for commercial use by the Fort Amherst trust, I definitely have mixed feelings about this.
The following is from their site on Facebook...

Fort Amherst
TALENT needs a place to shine, and with our new venue now opening its doors, that place could be the Grand Magazine - a stunning building that could host performers including singers, dancers, actors, comedians, and bands either inside, or on top of the newly renovated building. If you are interested in events that can be held in any weather, or are you looking for an opportunity for live performance don’t hesitate to tell us!

Must be a money making exercise? its certainly not a magazine restoration for historical reasons... looking at the photos one couldn't see what it was originally intended for, it looks pretty but its not in keeping with the other parts of the fort shown on here.

I believe they have already held a few weddings in the magazine.

This looks absolutely great.... but no longer looks like a 'Grand Magazine', it looks more like an art or Picture gallery? perhaps that is what was intended, I hope they do as good a job on the Caponiers.

Would the passageways be the lighting passageways? Should be glassed off holes between them and the magazine, have seen lighting passages in other fortress magazines.
