I have an aerial photo from about 1970 showing the tower surrounded by scaffolding. I can only assume that this was when the top half was removed and that it was due to some structural issue.

A man emailed me after I put the ` Navy House ` position in this column, saying he was tracing his family tree.
His relation was a handy man at Navy House, after his naval service, like my father. Smiffy put a photo
of the Navy House on here after. Hope it helps him, with his ` tree `. An ex US Air Force Man, he was.

Navy House was as stated on the left going up Clover Street before you get to Best Street.
Best Street had wooden houses, where my uncle lived, later moved to Haig Ave / White Road.
My father worked at Navy House, as the `handy man`.

I wonder what the ride was like in one of those old Charabancs. Solid tyres and leaf springs would make for an interesting journey.

The hat on that gentleman was something I noticed straightaway ! But as a child I remember my Dad always wearing his trilby and I'm not 100 yet  (child of the 40s ) 
It did look like a lovely day out .

There definitely was some sort of church in Clover Street.  Vague feeling may have been Ebenezeer Chapel or such.

Ebenezer Church, now Emmaus Church Centre, is  a combination of United Reformed Church and St John's Church of England Church. It is on the opposite side of the road to the buildings in the photos, opposite the end of Richard Street.

I used to attend Zion Baptist Church in the mid 80's. It was a car garage fix shop next door. Unfortunately I think the Church building became structurally compromised after the building of the ring road. After about 15 years or so from the ring road development it got demolished and the last I remember there was a video store built in its place.

There was something disquieting about seeing the old church where I used to sit stripped down to ground level but with enough interior to see where I once hung out.

I remember Brown Bros opening recall they sold motor spares thought they took over part of the Navy House .Is'nt the large building behind the small car park on the corner of Clover St the old Navy House?

The Navy House, The Medway Mission to Seaman, was on the South East side of Clover Street, no. 7, next to it was Brown Bros, then the Zion Baptist Church.

Got that from my 1968 Kelly's.
