PLACEDATEHOURSUMMARY OF EVENTS AND INFORMATION
Chatham10930Testing or Air Raid Sirens in Kent.
11Situation returns to be made by all units to Garrison Adjutant at 0530 and 1730 hours each day.  Reports to be forwarded to Area.
11 Eastern Command teleprint received:-  In view of the action in Holland, in landing German Troops in British uniforms, by parachute, or troop-carrying aircraft, any men so dropped should be treated as Enemy, and engaged by nearest troops with all available weapons and with utmost ruthlessness.  Speed is the essence of the problem.  This does not apply to individual airmen making forced descent by parachute from damaged aircraft.  All troops will act as if in contact with the Enemy, maintaining constant vigilance, and standing to act at Dusk and Dawn.
111230Intimation received that action is to be taken in accordance with Appendix 'H' Chatham Area Home Defence Scheme.  Immediate assistance platoons will move to aerodrome and R.D.F. Stations and remain until further notice.  Road blocks will be made ready but not placed in position until ordered.  Guards on all V.P's to be warned to keep especial look out for enemy Parachutists.  Troops earmarked for action will stand by at a two hours notice, other than immediate assistance platoons who will act as above.
11All ranks confined to Barracks until further notice.
121145Roads at Chattenden to be camouflaged.
12All leave cancelled and personnel recalled.
12All ranks who travel in private vehicles outside Garrison Area are to be in possession of either a rifle or pistol and ammunition.

1.   The detail of Officers mentioned below will assemble at the School of Military Engineering, Main Building, (Room 25), Chatham on Monday, 22nd April 1940, at 10.a.m., for the purpose of trying by General Court Martial the accused person named in the margin:-

PLACEDATEHOURSUMMARY OF EVENTS AND INFORMATION
Chatham3Official intimation received from the War Office that a separate establishment for Headquarters, Chatham Garrison has been approved and with effect from this date Garrison Headquarters will function as such.  Garrison Headquarters was separated from Chatham Area Headquarters on 19th September 1939, and has functioned as a separate office, located in the S.M.E. Chatham since then.  The establishment has now approved is as follows:-
1.Garrison Adjutant, Garrison Sergeant Major, 3 Civilian Clerks, 1 Orderly.  The Commandant, S.M.E. as senior officer in the station performs the duties of O.C. Troops, Chatham.  Brigadier E.E.B. Mackintosh D.S.O., Commandant, S.M.E. and O.C. Troops, Chatham assumes command of the Chatham area during the absence on leave of Major-General A.A. Goschen, C.B. D.S.O.
2.30830Det. No.13 Holding Battalion, providing the V.P. Guard at Cooling Marshes is withdrawn permanently on instruction from Headquarters, Chatham Area.
3.60705No. 696 Artisan Works Company, R.E., left Chatham for Margate.
4.8Captain G.W.A., Courtice Chatham Division, Royal Marines, assume duties of Acting Garrison Adjutant, Chatham until 15th during the period that Major N.W. Finlinson, South Staffordshire Regiment, is on leave.
5.8Report received from O.C. 8th (HD) Bn., East Surrey Regiment, to the effect that the sentry o the Gillingham Railway Tunnel last night fired at someone trespassing on Railway property.  No further result of the investigation.
6.9Det. 14th Holding Battalion arrived and took over the vulnerable points of the Lodge Hill Guard that had previously been manned by personnel of 13th Holding Battalion.
7.13Det. 14th Holding Battalion handed over the guarding of the vulnerable points of the Lodge Hill Guard to 8th (HD) Bn. East Surrey Regiment, and left Chatham Sub-Area.
8.15No. 717 Artisan Works Coy., R.E., formed at Chatham and was attached to No.1 Depot Battalion, Royal Engineers.  A and B Companies 1st S/L Bn. Left Chatham for Sutton Scotney.
9.15Major P. St.B Sydenham, R.E., Brigade Major S.M.E. vacates appointment on posting to the Trench Warfare Experimental Centre, Imber.
10.220705No. 699 General Construction Coy., R.E., and 717 Artisan Works Coy., R.E., left Chatham.
11.221000A General Court Martial assembled in Room 25 at the S.M.E.
12.23Superintending Clerk W.E. Harris reported at the S.M.E. for duty as Q.M. Vice Lt. (Q.M.). J,E, Lawrence.
13.270705A detachment of 4 Officers and 160 other ranks left No.1 Depot Battalion, Royal Engineers, to join the B.E.F.  No. 2 Engineer Base Workshop arrived.
