News: “Over the graves of the Druids and under the wreck of Rome,
Rudely but surely they bedded the plinth of the days to come.
Behind the feet of the Legions and before the Norseman’s ire
Rudely but greatly begat they the framing of State and Shire
Rudely but deeply they laboured, and their labour stand till now.
If we trace on ancient headlands the twist of their eight-ox plough.”

I was christened in this church in the early eighties, then attended a Tuesday night youth club there throughout the eighties, I don`t think it closed until the mid nineties. In the late eighties the vicar at the time, Gilbert Spencer, arranged for a group of us one evening to explore the crypt and the tunnels underneath, accessed by a trap door exposed by moving some pews on the Railway Street side of the building. As a small boy the tunnels seemed quite extensive, although looking back now I couldn`t say if they extended beyond the foot print of the church or not.
I remember there being constant issues with the roof, with regular water damage inside and always plenty of buckets dotted around catching drips.

Does anybody know anything about the two WW1 War Memorials in St Johns please?

Are there any photographs or records of the names?

I`m sure this church was still operating in the early 70s, in fact I think I was baptised there in 1967?
I remember walking past every day on the way to town and am sure we went in sometimes as I remember it had fantastic stained glass windows?

Just had a thought (wonders will never cease :) ) I think one of the teachers where I work is a member of the Emmaus church, will ask her on Monday if there is a way of contacting someone who MIGHT reply ?

Mine never bounced - I just haven't heard anything. What makes churches so difficult to contact? I thought the church welcomed all - whoops bit of personal gripe there crept in.

A potential KHF organised visit perhaps?

I understand that this church may yet be brought back into regular use - at least it`s one of several proposals on the cards.
