The original foundations for the front of the building , go down just about 1 foot!  - I will post a pic later in the week.

The foundation work was due to be done in December, this has now been delayed until mid January and is expected to take 4 weeks.

The Brook Low Level Pumping Station and Industrial Museum, Solomons Road, Chatham is regarded as the best preserved example of a diesel-powered water pumping station in Britain and is scheduled as an Ancient Monument.

It has recently developed some nasty cracks, which appear to me to be due to subsidence of the foundations of the front elevation.  It was only ever open for a few hours on two days per week, and now it is closed until further notice.

Here are some photos.

Just to show that I know how to focus a camera properly:

That's a lovely old Aveling and Porter - such a pity it's swathed in canvas sheets!

I used to work for the company who supplied that equipment,
It's good that they are starting work, Although could always be temporary to prevent further damage while they put out tenders for it.

Lets hope they haven't left it too long, we don't want to lose another fine & historic building.

Up until yesterday (and for the past 11 months, since the council closed the building to the public) the wall has been gradually falling outwards and has been un-supported. The supports were put in yesterday (23/09/09) to prevent any further movement , hopefully the repair work will start soon.

Karlostg, are the pictures demonstrating that repair work has begun or that it needs to get started urgently?

Its been decided (with English Heritage) that the best action is to stabilise the building and make good the cracks etc rather than a rebuild.
