News: “Over the graves of the Druids and under the wreck of Rome,
Rudely but surely they bedded the plinth of the days to come.
Behind the feet of the Legions and before the Norseman’s ire
Rudely but greatly begat they the framing of State and Shire
Rudely but deeply they laboured, and their labour stand till now.
If we trace on ancient headlands the twist of their eight-ox plough.”

Its been decided (with English Heritage) that the best action is to stabilise the building and make good the cracks etc rather than a rebuild.

I hope it doesn't need a rebuild or anything else that will make it all comlicated!  I look forward to seeing any finds from the trenches  :)

Cant say until a proper survey is done, involving digging trenches etc.
(cant wait to see the spoil coming out those trenches!)

Best case scenario, building is proped up and underpinning etc, open by the end of the year,
worse case is a rebuild !, with money and time etc it wont be happening soon  :'(

As merc says, thats a shame!  Any idea how long the works are going to take or if they will be completed?

Please Note : The Old Brook Pumping Station in Chatham will be closed until further notice
(few building structural problems!)

I know the tunnel you mean, but its not marked on any of the sewer maps, so I would guess not. The Bourne ended up becoming the main sewer line from Luton, being brick lined. The sewer up Chatham Hill carries on all the way to Motney Hill pumping station, with gravity taking over once the sludge got up the top of the hill.

Welcome Ktg :)

Do you know if the blocked tunnel entrance on Chatham Hill near Luton Arches has got anything to do with the original Brook/Old Bourne River etc ?

I saw that sewage was pumped up Chatham Hill and i thought it might have been an old access tunnel or something.
