The photographs from LenP of the gun holdfast of a Joss Bay gun is in fact the holdfast for one of the two 4 inch guns of Kingsgate Battery.

BenG, that's what I thought too but Joss Bay is the nearest emplacement mentioned on the forum which is why I posted it in this thread. Perhaps JohnG can enlighten us?

Looking at where that is on the beach I can't imagine that it came from the Joss Battery.
Would the tide really be able to move that?

Interesting, I had assumed that the guns were sited on the cliffs and not at the water's edge?

This is on the beach between Joss Bay and Stone Bay although it's much nearer the latter. Is it from a gun position?

There are some underground water tanks where the battery was so I wound imagine any remains of the battery would have been cleared away when they build the water tanks.
There was a 4 inch Battery not far away called Kingsgate Battery 2 x 4 inch Mk VII guns.  At the start of WW2 the navy handed over lots of guns to the army to arm coast batteries.  Just after these guns were installed the navy wanted most of the 4 inch guns back for arming merchant ships, so some of these 4 inch batteries had a very short life as coast batteries.  JohnG

Joss bay battery was situated between the present day car park, and the existing house which is on the edge of the North Foreland Estate. the battery search lights were set in the dip in front of the lighthouse. The battery shooting range was in the car park.

You're right!  Sorry, it's just that I didn't know there was a picture of Bethlehem Battery. Do you know of any other pictures of Joss Bay battery? I live in Broadstairs and have searched (in vain) for the site of the Joss bay battery, which I presume is under the North Foreland private estate now?  Do you know of any remains of it or exactly where it was situated?

thanks
