News: “Over the graves of the Druids and under the wreck of Rome,
Rudely but surely they bedded the plinth of the days to come.
Behind the feet of the Legions and before the Norseman’s ire
Rudely but greatly begat they the framing of State and Shire
Rudely but deeply they laboured, and their labour stand till now.
If we trace on ancient headlands the twist of their eight-ox plough.”

Busyglen - there are lots of SPAIN families in this area !!  We know some.

Ellenkate

I just wish I couldn remember why I was interested in them at some point!  Could be that I was helping someone else out with the name at some time.  When I'm not so stressed out, I'll see if I can find my previous notes.

Interesting Ellenkate! I have a niggling feeling that I've had something on SPAIN before, but I'm blowed if I can remember what it was.  :)

from Kentish Gazette, October 1832: DEAL -
On the night of Friday last the storehouse of Mr FINNIS, Sailmaker, Farrier Street, Deal, was entered by means of forcing off the padlock and six bolts of canvas carried away of the value of about £30.  At present there is not the least suspicion whom the offenders are. Since the daring and extensive robbery at Mr HUMPHERY's Silversmiths there have been several depredations committed;  and though a sharp look out is kept,  the villains at present have escaped detection.

Lists of names are always VERY useful to 'family-tree-ers'.

Here is a case for the justices:

(taken from Kentish Gazette July 1821)
DARING OUTRAGE

Whereas Stephen SPAIN, James BOBIAS, John MACKNEY and Henry STOKES, late of Deal, mariners, and others, stand impeached with having violently assaulted John SMITH and Edmond PAIN the elder, of Deal, with having tarred and feathered them, and dragged them about the town of Deal in a cart, and committed other outrages upon the persons of said John SMITH and Edmond PAIN –
The Commissioners of Excise, for bringing these offenders to Justice, do hereby offer a reward of One Hundred Pounds, to any person or persons who shall discover the said Stephen SPAIN, James BOBIAS, John MACKNEY, and Henry STOKES, so that they may be apprehended;  to be paid by the Secretary, on the commitment and safe delivery of two or more of them, into the custody of the keeper of any of His Majesty’s gaols.  By order of the Board, Thomas BURTON, Secretary, 7 July 1821.

Glad it has been of interest.

I thought that not only the bits of history gleaned from these records, the names that are also mentioned, could be of interest to the genealogists amongst us.  :)

Thanks for all of the interesting pieces that you are putting up Ellenkate.

To be fought at the New Inn at Deal, on Mon. and Tues. next
(Kentish Gazette Fri mar 8 1799).
