An entirely reasonable theory CDP, my thinking was population migration towards London following the Black Death in 1665 to replace labour lost to plague!

Thanks for those tit-bits . I believe after the Great Fire of London circa 1666 the call went out for all workers of wood to help rebuild London and so all the shipbuilders ,Shipwrights  from "all over"  went to London to help . (What do you think of my theory ??)

I thought the book was very good.

1200 ish  to 1650 ish in Wiltshire  ;-  one day we will connect the two lines !!!!!!!!!

Must be a common theme CDP - my family moved from Wiltshire to Deptford at the turn of the 19th century and I've tracked the lineage back to the early 18th century. I haven't done much research over the last 3 winters, something I really must attend to...

Interesting info CDP - my family were shipwrights, then later Game Merchants, in Deptford Dockyard during the 19th century.

A lot of people forget or do not realise that a huge area of old kent is now part of London. Woolwich also had a large Royal dockyard and when it closed a number of sheds and machinery were transfered down to Chatham.
